Discerning With Mystics

This service will be in person and by Zoom.

There is a difference between discernment and decision making.  Analytics and data sets will give you one set of quantitative wisdom.  The heart/spirit/soul lends a qualitative wisdom, that may be different or difficult to describe altogether.  With all that is going on in the world, politically and socially, how do we choose our responses with an ear to deep wisdom, with the goal of discernment in mind?   We will turn our ears and hearts to the topic of Mysticism, and ask what the mystics of a variety of religious traditions have to teach us today.

  • What are some of the common characteristics of mystical experiences?
  • When considering inter-religious dialogue, should we speak of one mysticism, or many?
  • What are some of the common criticisms that are made about religion based on immediate experiences?

And finally, might mysticism still be of value even if a person has doubts about the degree to which it yields important knowledge about reality outside the self/mind?  Thank you for joining in the conversation at KUUF!
