Forum: Music Reparations

Forum will by by Zoom only.

Our May 8th forum will focus on the topic of Reparation Royalties, defined as a practice of valuing the musical contributions of African American persons through payments for music and songs that we use, and have been using, for decades without proper credit to the authors. Many UU congregations are considering how to respond.  Elen will introduce the reparations topic with the charge that our UU faith places upon us and the guidance offered to us per the “Report of the UUA Commission on Institutional Change.”  “Widening the Circle of Concern,” encourages us to deepen our understanding.

Sandra Loy will examine the long history of Black American music and its interaction with U.S. Copyright law. Joan will share how other congregations have addressed this issue. Time for discussion will follow. Join us to explore and discuss something we’ve all taken for granted, but that is not fair and just.

If you are able, please investigate other websites and use the link below to reach the google file to add your suggestions to the list! below any that Fellowship members should consider exploring: https://itif.org/publications/2022/02/11/music-compensation-united-states-why-american-music-fairness-act-necessary.
