Who Controls Your Electricity?

Speaker:
Service Type:
Most of us only interact with the energy system when our monthly electric bill shows up in the mail or when the power goes out, and often that's painful. But we all deserve energy that's affordable, reliable and sustainable. At We The People Michigan, we've learned that UPPCO (Upper Peninsula Power Co.) and other utilities are owned by investment firms, and that means they're driven to create profit for others, not take care of the people in our community or the planet. Join a conversation to learn about a laser-focused intervention in the current energy system that will help pave the way for a green, affordable and reliable energy system and real choice for where our electricity comes from. The effort is being led by residents from Houghton, Gogebic and Marquette Counties. Our presenter will be Megan Hess, the Rural Organizing Director at We The People Michigan, and an Ojibway woman living in Sault Ste. Marie on her tribe's ancestral homelands. She's a 2007 Michigan Tech grad with deep family roots in the Keweenaw.
